OBITUARY: Lillian B. Johnston, 74, died on May 12,
2004, at her home in Libby. She was born on Nov. 24, 1928, at Havre, to Warren
P. and Blanche B. Evert. In 1946 she came to Libby where she met and married
Joseph L. Johnston on Nov. 24, 1947. Lillian worked for a time at St. Regis
where she made many friends. She also worked at Chapman?s Variety and later with
nephew Bart Teske at Kootenai Karpets. Affectionately referred to as Aunt Lil by
the townspeople with whom she built close relationships, Lillian had another
title, Ma Wing, in reference to the way she took young friends of her children
?under her wing,? offering advice, counsel and encouragement. After retiring,
Lillian spent most of her time at her home at the foot of Bobtail Hill, tending
to her goats and chickens. She loved her wood stove and continued to chop wood
and kindling daily. She also enjoyed her John Deere riding lawnmower. An avid
quilter, she completed many quilts for family members and friends. Lillian was
preceded in death by her father Warren in 1958; her son James in 1968; husband
Joe in 1986 and son Jan Bandan and mother Blanche, who both died in 1995.
Survivors include her son Joseph, Libby; son Jerry and his wife Charlie, Marion,
and daughter Jonette Tubb and her husband Stan, Libby; brother Earl Henry
Evert, Kalispell; grandchildren Jessica Brooks, G.J. Zajanc, Cricket
Johnston, David and Susan Tubb and Colton Joseph Tubb, three
great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, special friends and neighbors Mike
and Jule Mason and their children Christina, Cody and Justus. Lillian
particularly enjoyed her years as camp host at Firemans? Park, where she met and
kept in touch with many travelers. That part of her life inspired her family to
have her services at Camp Host Spot No. 3 at Fireman?s Park at 2 p.m. on Monday,
May 17. She was buried beside her husband Joe, along with sons James and Jan, at
the City of Libby Cemetery. A celebration of her life followed at the
Elks Lodge. (Source: Western News - (May/20/2004))
