Bertha Evert, 96, Dies--Bertha Eveline (Reed) Evert was
born August 31, 1884 in Harper County, Kansas to Anna Petronella and Samuel H.
Reed. She departed this life August 19, 1981 at the Mullen Hospital at the age
of 96 years, 11 months and 18 days.
Bertha was one of a family of eight children. Preceding her in death were
her parents, four brothers and two sisters, her husband Henry Evert, one infant
daughter, and sons John and Henry Evert.
She grew up in Kansas and Missouri, and came to the Hyannis area in 1909 and
took a homestead in southern Cherry County.
In January 1911, she was married to Henry Evert. To this union were born two
sons and three daughters.
Survivors include Web Richards of Hyannis, Nebraska, Mrs. Mabel McKeever of
Ottumwas, Iowa, Mrs. Edith Maire of Fortuna, California, Mrs. Leon Bassett of
Whitman and Mrs. Alice Roberts of Valentine; twenty-two grandchildren,
thirty-six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; one sister,
Mrs. Ola Gwinn of Oakland, Illinois, and a number of nieces, nephews and many
friends.
She will be remembered as a loving and understanding wife and mother, and
will be greatly missed by all.
She has been a member of the United Church of Christ and King's Daughters
for over sixty years.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 24, 1981 at the United Church of
Christ in Hyannis with Rev. Jewell Johnson officiating. Internment was in the
Hyannis Cemetery.
[As far as I know, Bertha was not one of 8 but rather one of 11--herself and 4
half sisters, one sister, and 5 brothers. Her sister Viola May Reed Gwinn
survived her. This obituary fails to mention her first marriage to Charles
Richards--Welby ("Web"), Mabel and an unnamed daughter who died at birth were
his children. From the GenWeb for Texas County, MO I got the cemetery listing
for the Number One Cemetery. Buried there, next to her grandmother Anna P. Reed,
is "Richards, infant dau of C.F. & B.E. 8 June 1900 B&D"]

In tribute to a very loving woman, the town of Valentine awarded her their
Outstanding Citizen award on February 14, 1993.
She was loved by many very deeply and will be sadly missed.
[I believe I mentioned to you before that Edith, Henry, and Elaine (the 3
adopted children) were Henry Warren Evert's.]
