Elwin "Butt" Barnes Sr. (The Daily Review)

Elwin "Butt" Barnes Sr., 87, of Canton, Pa., passed away while surrounded by his family on Saturday evening, May 1, 2010 at the Bradford County Manor.

Elwin R. Barnes was born on March 31, 1923, in Langton near Ralston, Pa. He was one of six children of the late Stephen Ardell and Edna J. (Hurlburt) Barnes. "Butt," as he was affectionately known by family and friends, proudly served our country during World War II with the U.S. Army's 103rd Infantry.

He was employed by several area sawmills, including W. Baumunk in Forksville, L. Baumunk in Shunk, Bagley's Pallet Mill in Canton, McCarty/Driscoll in Shunk, House Brothers in Blossburg and Cummings in Ralston. He also worked for the Monahan Coal Mine and Belmar Manufacturing in Canton.

Butt was a man who believed in a good day's work. He was loved by family and friends for his quiet and caring nature. Butt was happiest while being outdoors. He was a knowledgeable woodsman and outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and working in his yard. He also was a handy-man type and liked to tinker on cars and fix lawn mowers.

Surviving are: his six children, Anna Watkins (Gerald Groover) of Canton, Juanita Winder of Williamsport, Linda Perry (Kevin Rhinehart), Robin (Jeff) Campbell, Gary Barnes and Elwin Jr. (Tammy) Barnes, all of Canton; 12 grandchildren, Josh (Martha) Watkins, Treasha Watkins, Danny, Thomas and Rose Winder, Shane (Brenda) Joralemon, Brandon and Dylan Perry, Melissa and Brock Gardner, Stephanie Calkins and Sammy Barnes; 12 great-grandchildren, Avery and Isais Watkins, Kirsten and Kayla Winder, Abby Joralemon, Morgan Champaign, Kaiden and Teriyn Walmsley, Nathaniel Hieatt-Calkins, Noah and Blaine Calkins and new baby girl, born on May 2, Marian Rose Watkins; two brothers, Steve Barnes of Beech Flats and Art (Thelma) Barnes of Leolyn; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Also special to Elwin were three special "Poppa II grandkids": Yelena Michelle Morgan, Gracie Mae Colton, Bella Rodriguez and Austin J. Willow, his caregivers and friends at Bradford County Manor.

He was predeceased by: a great-grandson and great-granddaughter, Jamie Winder and Kayla Winder; three siblings, Christine Saunders, Frances Rouppert and Lawrence Barnes; and brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, William Rouppert, James Saunders and Shirley Barnes.

His family invites friends to call from 6–8 p.m. Wednesday at Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive in Canton. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at the funeral home with Rev. Duane Taylor and Rev. Jeff Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in Beech Flats Cemetery with full military honors accorded. LAWRENCE WILLIAM BARNES. On the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, Lawrence William Barnes of Roaring Branch RR1 passed away quietly at Carleton Senior Care in Wellsboro. He was 73 years of age.
Born April 19, 1929, in the Lycoming County village of Langton, he was one of six children in the family of Ardel and Edna (Hurlburt) Barnes. Lawrence was employed for many years as a lumber grader for L.L. Baumunk & Son. As a young man he was introduced to a girl named Grace Moyer, and before long a romance blossomed.
They were united in marriage on Aug. 4, 1951, and together they raised nine children. Lawrence was an active member of Canton Lodge #429, Loyal Order of Moose, where he often engaged in one of his favorite pastimes, pitching horseshoes. For many years he participated in their weekly tournaments.
Lawrence was also an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed vegetable gardening. He had a natural knack for things mechanical, and could often be found making repairs on the cars of friends and neighbors. In fact, Lawrence was the kind of man who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever necessary. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 51 years, Grace, at home; his sons, Thomas and Sue Barnes of Canton RR2, Lawrence "Jake" and Kimberly Barnes of Morris Run, Charles Barnes and Linda Wilber of Canton, and Michael and Nora Barnes of Canton RR 2; daughters Nancy Nybeck of Muncy, Pam Brotzman of Grover, Miranda Barnes of Mainesburg, and Donna and Paul Patrick of North Carolina. He is also survived by brothers Elwin Barnes of Canton RR 3, Arthur and Thelma Barnes of Roaring Branch, and Stephen Barnes of Beech Flats; sisters Christina Saunders of Dushore and Frances Rupert of Montgomery; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Shirley (Fitzwater) Barnes, and a brother-in-law, Jim Saunders.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, Dec. 26, at Morse and Kleese Funeral Home Inc., 40 N. Center St., Canton from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which time members of Canton Lodge #429 L.O.O.M. will accord honors.
Funeral and committal services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James House, pastor of St. John's United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be private. (The Daily Review, 12/26/2002)

During the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 24, 2002, James Harry Saunders of Dushore went home to the Lord after a prolonged stay at Robert Packer Hospital. He was 64 years of age.
Born in Leolyn, Pa., on Oct. 6, 1937, he was one of five children in the family of Eugene and Laura Williams Saunders.
Jim was a man who was familiar with hard work. In his early youth he labored at the heavy tasks of farming throughout the area. Upon reaching adulthood, Jim sought the adventure of life on the road with the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. But after a few years he realized that the life of a carney was not for him. Jim found employment as a tractor-trailer driver, which gave him a better lifestyle without sacrificing the adventure of the open road. Jim still found time to work at odd jobs and do repairs for friends.
One day while working in such a capacity he chanced to meet his friend's widowed sister. Romance was in the air, and in 1964 he married Christine Barnes Carson, opening his heart and establishing a home for her and her children in Dushore.
Jim loved his newfound family, sharing in their joys and sorrows as any father would. He took a job driving a truck for a local rubbish disposal company, thereby enabling him to remain closer to home.
Jim was a self-taught mechanic, and enjoyed sharing this talent by repairing the cars of his children and grandchildren. He was also quite adept at painting auto bodies. He also enjoyed building model cars and collecting stamps and coins.
Not all of Jim's interests were mechanical in nature. He was an avid genealogist who spent countless hours researching his family tree.
Jim also had a close walk with the Lord all of his life. As a youth he was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church and through the years read the Scriptures daily. He knew his Lord on a personal basis and always tried to let the love of Christ shine through in all that he did.
Jim is survived by his wife, Christine, at home; stepsons, Adrian and Arthur Carson of Dushore; stepdaughter, Mildred Miller of Towanda; brothers, John Saunders of Canton RR 3 and Francis Dean (and Ruth Ann) Saunders of McDonald, Tenn.; sisters, Laura Jean (and George) Albinus of Cleveland, Tenn., and Phyllis Saunders of Canton RR 3; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene, in 1980, and his mother, Laura, in 2000.
Calling hours will be Monday, July 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Morse and Kleese Funeral Home Inc., 40 N. Center St., Canton.
Services will follow at 11 a.m. with Elder Charles Jake Randall of the Canton Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Grover Cemetery.

Frances N. Rupert, 82, of 1980 Route 405, Muncy, died Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Born in the village of Leolyn on February 3, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Edna (Hurlbert) Barnes. Frances was employed as a sander for 17 years with Rochelle Furniture Manufacturing of Montgomery, retiring in 2002. For many years, she also worked at McDonald's in South Williamsport, as well as working as a waitress at the Bower-Decker Post #251 American Legion in Montgomery, where she was a member of the ladies auxiliary. She was also a member of the Muncy Valley Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #866 and the 40/8 S.O.L. Club in Williamsport. Frances was a sports enthusiast and thoroughly enjoyed cheering for her favorites, the Philadelphia Eagles football team and driver Jeff Gordon on the NASCAR circuit. She also liked to go dancing and took several bus trips to Atlantic City. Frances was a member of New Life Church, Pennsdale. Surviving are one son, Larry M. Rupert, Sr. of Goldsboro, NC; two daughters, Charlotte L. Warner of Montgomery and Deborah A. Moore of Muncy; three brothers, Arthur Barnes of Roaring Branch and Elwin "But" Barnes and Steve Barnes, both of Canton; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by one sister, Cristina Saunders; one brother, Lawrence Barnes; and a great-great-grandson, Lawrence, who died in infancy. Friends will be received on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Grenoble's, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Officiating will be her pastor, Rev. Robert A. Lauver. Burial will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery. The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to either the New Life Church, 1006 Village Road, Pennsdale, PA 17756 or a charity of one's choice.
