Son-in-law's obit: GRAHAM Roger C.
(Tink)
On the morning of Saturday, October 6, 2001, Roger Collins Graham, Sr., of
Roaring Branch, passed away unexpectedly at Troy Community Hospital. He was 76
years of age. Born on the family farm in McNett Township, Lycoming County, he
was the son of Walter Lafeyette Graham and Clara Victoria Jackson Graham. Known
to his friends as "Tink," Mr. Graham attended the McNett Township school, and in
his early teens helped to support the family by working the farm on a full-time
basis. He answered our country's call during World War II, serving most
diligently and honorably with the U.S. Army. After the war, he worked for the
Belmar Company in Canton, as a lumber grader. Eventually, he was hired as a
foundry worker with J.P. Ward Manufacturing of Blossburg, where he specialized
in aluminum casting. He was employed there for 39 years, retiring in 1987.
Roger courted a young lady, June Marie Hurlburt, whom he had known for several
years, and on November 16, 1950, they were united in marriage. Together, they
shared almost 51 years and raised six children. Mr. Graham loved his wife and
family with all of his heart. Where their happiness and well-being were
concerned, no sacrifice was too great. During instances of economic downturn,
Mr. Graham often did without so that his beloved family would never experience
hard times. He was a man with a very personal, deep faith in the Lord, not
given to public worship but communing with his Maker in solitude amidst the
beauty and splendor of the Almighty's creation. Nonetheless, he recognized the
value of formal Christian instruction for the young and took his children to
church each week. Mr. Graham was a member of Canton Post 714 VFW as well as the
American Legion in Wormleysburg. He enjoyed hunting, old time Country music and
was a lifelong fan of novels by Zane Grey. Roger had a knack for tinkering with
anything mechanical, which earned him his well-known nickname, Tink. But by far,
his greatest joy in life was being in the company of the family he loved. Mr
Graham is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, June, at home, sons Roger C.
(Janet) Graham of Canton, John Robin (Ruth) Graham of Mansfield, Patrick
(Arlene) Graham of Roaring Branch; daughters June (Jim) Duffy of Mansfield, Jo
Ann Thompson of Virginia Beach, VA, Jill (Walt) Parkhurst of Troy; sisters
Jessie (James) Herman of Grover, Emma (Paul) Machmer and Anna Renstrom, all of
Canton; brother-in-law Robert Webster of Mansfield; 18 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was
preceeded in death by his brothers, Wellington Lorenzo Graham and Walter Jackson
Graham, sisters Elaine Wilcox and Muriel Webster and an infant son. In keeping
with Mr. Graham's wishes, there will be no public calling hours or services.
There will be a time of visitation and remembrance for family members, with
interment in the Rutty Cemetery, Canton Township. Memorial contributions may be
directed to the American Diabetes Foundation Memorial Fund, PO Box 2687, Canton,
OH 44727. Professional services have been entrusted to Morse & Kleese Funeral
Home, Inc. 40 N. Center St., Canton.
