WHITMAN - Leon Theodocia Evert Bassett, 82, formerly of Whitman, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at the Pioneer Memorial Rest Home in Mullen.
She was born Oct. 3,1924, at Hyannis to William Henry and Bertha E. Reed Evert, the youngest of eight children. Leon attended Hyannis Public School. On her 20th birthday, she joined the U.S. Army, serving in the WACS from Oct. 3, 1944, to Dec. 21, 1945.
On Sept. 9, 1950, she married Ray Bassett in Mullen. Leon was a rural mail carrier and helped her husband at Ray's Service in Whitman.
Mrs. Bassett was a member of the Hyannis Legion Auxiliary, Friendship Club, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family and always sharing her humor and wit.
She is survived by three sons, Jim (Eleanor) Cook of Brookings, Ore., Francis Bassett of Hyannis and Robert (Heather) Bassett of Whitman; three daughters, Carolyn (Joe) Jara of Lincoln, Bertha (Mick) Downing of Hyannis and Ruth (Mike) Shimmin of Tryon; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Henry and Webb; and sisters, Edith, Alice, Mabel and an infant at birth.
Memorials are suggested to the Hyannis Legion Auxiliary.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. MST Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at the Whitman Community Building in Whitman.
The memorial book may be signed at the Mullen Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
