Mrs. MERCINA COATS
This community has been called upon again to mourn the passing of one of its
oldest residents. Mrs. MERCINA COATS was born in the town of Independence, Feb'y
25, 1849, the second daughter of Jason and Lucretia RICHMOND HARRIS. She was
married to Andrew Jackson COATS in 1864. To this union were born three children:
Mrs. Metta VANDERBEEK of Whitesville, Jason COATS, who died about 25 years ago
and Charles COATS of North Hill; three grandchildren, Guy COATS, Mrs. Harley
HAWKS and Mrs. Lewis SCOVILLE, ten great-grandchildren, one brother, E. B.
HARRIS of Wellsville, two sisters, Mrs. Amelia PAYNE of Payneville and Mrs. Mary
GOODRIDGE of Bolivar also survive besides a large circle of other relatives and
friends. In early life Mrs. Coats united with the Universalist Church and
remained a true and faithful Christian until the Master called her to her reward
March 22, 1924 at her home on North Hill. Mrs. Coats was a great sufferer of
heart disease for about ten yeas but bore it all with patience and always
looking on the bright side of life.
She was tenderly cared for by her daughter, son and sister through her last
suffering which was very intense at times. She was a kind and loving wife,
mother, and sister and friend to all.
To the sorrowing ones we extend our deepest sympathy and commend them to the one
who does all things well.
The funeral was held Tuesday, March 25th at the Universalist church at
Whitesville, Rev. Dr. Todd, officiating. Burial in rural cemetery.
